AAIA Salary: Most of the Numbers You’ve Read Are Made Up. Here’s What the Market Actually Pays.

By Dr. Baz Abouelenein, AAIA, CISA, CISM, CRISC, CISSP, PMP — a CIO who has hired IT auditors and passed the AAIA on the first attempt.

Here is the honest answer up front: there is no such thing as an “AAIA salary” yet. The credential has existed since May 2025. No salary survey, no compensation database, and no government dataset has had time to isolate what AAIA holders earn. Every article that quotes a specific AAIA salary figure either invented the number or borrowed it from a dataset that has nothing to do with the certification.

What does exist is verifiable data on the roles AAIA was built for. That data says AI-focused audit and governance roles in the US pay roughly $98,000 to $210,000 depending on seniority, that certifications appear in a minority of those postings, and that exactly one thing reliably moves your pay: changing what you do, not what letters follow your name.

Where the numbers you’ve read came from

The “$15,000–$25,000 salary increase” appears in a certification guide published by Vinsys with no survey, no sample, and no source. The same page claims a “340% increase in AI audit-related positions since 2024” and that professionals “recover their AAIA certification investment within 6–12 months” — also unsourced. A credential that launched in May 2025 cannot have a measured salary premium; the data does not exist yet.

The “$72,633 average AI auditor salary” from ZipRecruiter is an artifact of scraping every posting with “AI” and “auditor” in the title, including quality-control and annotation jobs unrelated to IT audit. Robert Half’s 2026 guide puts a plain IT auditor at $70,500–$101,000 — meaning the supposed AI specialist earns less than the generalist. One dedicated “AAIA certification salary” page lists fourteen salary figures; only two have citations.

What the market verifiably pays in 2026

Robert Half 2026 salary guide (placement-based): IT Auditor $70,500–$101,000; Senior IT Auditor $91,500–$128,750; IT Audit Manager $119,250–$168,000.

Axial Search tracked 1,997 US AI governance postings since January 2026 (71 new per week). Median posted salaries: Junior IC $114,000; Mid-level IC $150,000; Senior IC $157,000; Principal IC $210,000; Manager $178,000; Director $211,000.

The VerifyWise AI Governance Salary Report (Dec 2025–May 2026) lands in the same territory: roughly $130,000 for junior roles, $158,750 at manager level, and a 72% jump to $273,032 median at director and above.

The pay gap between conventional IT audit and AI-focused governance work is real — roughly $35,000 to $65,000 depending on level. That gap, not any certificate, is the money.

The one posting that names the AAIA

Allstate is recruiting a Lead AI & Technology Risk Auditor at a disclosed $98,100–$150,500. Required: CPA, CA, CISA, CIA, or CFE plus 5+ years experience. Preferred: 1+ years auditing AI/ML systems. “A plus”: ISACA Certificate in AI Fundamentals, ISACA Advanced in AI Audit (AAIA), AWS/Azure AI certifications. That is the AAIA’s actual market position in mid-2026: a tiebreaker, not a gate.

The certifications appearing most often in AI governance postings are CISSP, CISM, AIGP, and CRISC, each in 11–14% of postings. The AAIA does not yet crack that list. But the credential is currently ahead of the job boards — employers are already paying six figures for AI audit skill they can barely evaluate.

Who actually earns more (the mechanism)

IAPP salary research: professionals holding one IAPP credential earn about 13% more than uncertified peers; those holding multiple earn about 27% more. Professionals whose roles bridge privacy and AI governance report a median of $169,700 against $151,800 for AI-only practitioners. The certification does not cause the raise. It causes the interview, the internal assignment to the AI audit, the seat at the model-risk committee — and those cause the raise.

So is the AAIA worth it, financially?

All-in cost: $459 for ISACA members or $599 for non-members, plus a $50 application fee — $509–$649 total before study materials. The AAIA will probably not raise your pay in your current seat. It is cheap positioning for a move that verifiably pays $40,000+ more. The route from a senior IT auditor seat to a $150,000+ AI governance role is being traveled right now at 71 new postings a week. That window narrows as the AAIA shows up in more preferred-qualifications lists, the way CISA did a decade ago.
